Back in the Day

[An early posting today -- too much packing yet to go to wait 'til later!]

Kevin Hartt, the groom in the couple whose wedding we will witness in Goa next Wednesday, grew up on Braemar Road in Shaker Heights, a member of what came to be known as "the Braemar Bunch."

The group owes its origins to Rita and Tom Mathern, neighbors who left their small sailboat with Heidi and Lee and sold their station wagon (with boat hitch) to Diane and Dave Hartt when they moved to Saudi Arabia in the mid-'Eighties. Summer Sundays came to mean, together with the Sloans and the Prices, taking the boat out on Lake Erie from the beach at Mentor Headlands; consequently the adults and kids alike all learned to sail and the already-extant neighborhood bond among these families solidified into "the Braemar Bunch". Whenever the Matherns returned to the States on leave, the various family members were farmed out all over the neighborhood, firmly incorporating them into the group as well.

We gathered at the annual Braemar Road Block Party, shared holiday dinners, vacationed together on Hilton Head Island, watched the children grow into adulthood -- and gathered for weddings.

Now four of the five couples are off to India! Who would have ever thought that possible all those years ago?
